Treat your ears this Christmas Season

Alternatives to your clichéd Christmas carols

Return to 25 days of Christmas

Christmas Carols suck. That’s the view of the self-proclaimed grinch writing this article. It’s the same repetitive songs, over and over, everywhere you go from (basically) the start of November until sometime in January. Sure, they may have been OK the first 5 times we heard them – but seriously, it’s about time we had a refresh!

So here are our top alternative Christmas tunes to give all of our ears a refreshing change this year.

1. Stop listening to Mariah Carey. Please.

Do, however, listen to the awesome All I Want for Christmas is You cover by Sydney rockers Polish Club.

2. Stop listening to Do they know it’s Christmas. Yes, it was an important song that raised much needed funds and awareness for famine relief. But after 34 years, I’m sure they know it’s Christmas.

Instead, get your charity single fix by listening to Feel Inside (and stuff like that) written by New Zealand’s fourth-most-popular folk duo, Flight of the Conchords. While not specifically a Christmas song, this hilarious single was co-written by children and helps to raise funds for Cure Kids.

3. Stop listening to Sleigh Ride. I don’t care if your sleigh bells are jingle-ing or ring-ting tingle-ing.

Just stop, and do give “A Great Big Sled” by the Killers a go – a nice modern Christmas jam.

4. Stop listening to Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I’m sure it gives you nightmares of 3 hour long Christmas pageants.

Do lend your ears to Sia’s Santa’s Coming For Us – a great poppy Christmas tune by arguably Australia’s greatest musical export in the last decade.

5. O please Stop listening to O Christmas Tree. It’s been going since 1824 and needs a break.

Do put on Just Another Christmas Song by the late Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Aimed at converting Christmas-haters to give in and embrace the festivities, it does a great job with it’s funky retro-soul groove.

6. Stop listening to Here Comes Santa Claus. It can go right back up Santa Claus Lane and away from my ears.

Do dream of zombies and release your pent-up festive season rage by starting a Christmas mosh-pit when MXPX’s Christmas night of the living dead comes on.
